The City of Lancaster's Public Works Department is located at 1309 Lynwood Drive. Our departments operating hours are 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Office staff works on Friday to handle emergency services and can be reached at (803) 285-9431. If you have an emergency after hours call (803) 285-9431 and an on-call crew will be dispatched.
The City of Lancaster's Public Works Director Jerry Crockett is responsible for the efficient operation of a conglomerate of departments spanning from water and sewer installation and repairs, meter reading, trash pickup, residential garbage, commercial garbage, garbage transfer station, streets, warehousing, safety training, vehicle maintenance and office administration.
Public Works is responsible for installation and maintenance of main water and sewer lines and reporting road repairs associated with maintenance of these lines. Once a customer completes a water and sewer application at the Building Inspection Department, the application is sent to Public Works to determine where the taps will be made and stubbed out at the property line. If you have a problem whether it is water or sewer after your service is installed feel free to call this department and someone will be glad to assist in determining if it is the City’s responsibility or the property owner’s responsibility. A call to our department first can save you in unnecessary plumbing expenses.
The Meter Department, headed by Joe McGriff, is responsible for getting all the City's meters read each month. In October 2006, the City finished installing radio read meters for all locations. This new meter reading system will enable the City to read all the meter in just a few days. Your monthly bill is based on this meter reading. Billing questions are handled by the Utility Services Department at (803) 283-9991.
Maintenance of the sewer system is managed by Mark Harmon. He has a sewer crew, an Inflow and Infiltration Crew and a Flushing & TV crew. This department is capable of installing new sewer lines, repairing old sewer lines and manholes and also videoing existing lines for maintenance and they also maintain the rights of way for the sewer lines. This department is also responsible for making new and emergency replacement sewer taps.
Marty Cauthen is the Superintendent of Streets and Sanitation. Patching of utility cuts made by City crews is accomplished by the Street Department. City owned streets are maintained by the Street Department. Mr. Cauthen is also responsible for the efficient operation of the refuse services offered by the City. The City picks up residential garbage and trash Monday through Thursday for once-a-week pickup service. The City offers a backyard garbage pickup service for elderly (over 75) and disabled citizen call (803) 285-9431 to apply for this service or click here to download an application form. Commercial garbage is picked up at City businesses and is offered five (5) days a week. The City vacuums leaves at the curbside during the months of November through March. During the summer months rights of way are cut on designated streets. This department also offers construction dumpsters for major repair jobs. Click here to download an application for a construction dumpster. Sway cars are offered to residents of the City to use once a month at no fee for household cleanup projects. The sway cars are available only on weekends and are allocated on a first come first serve basis and you must come by the office the fill out the appropriate form or click here to download a form. After garbage is picked up in the City it is transported to the City’s Transfer Station where experienced drivers transfer the garbage into walking floor trailers and haul the debris to various landfills. The City of Lancaster has its own Vehicle Maintenance Department headed up by Dan Knight. His department is responsible for the repair and maintenance of the entire City fleet of vehicles which encompasses cars, trucks, fire trucks, backhoes, garbage trucks, track hoe, tractor trailers and various other pieces of equipment.
Making sure that all of this work is done in a safe manner is Doris Ealey, Safety Coordinator. She ensures that proper training is given to the employees to keep them working safely.
