Our historical commission is co-sponsoring an event with the Katawba Valley Land Trust on Tuesday night, October 23 at the historic courthouse.  It will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. and will feature Barry Beasley, former executive director of the KVLT, who will be speaking about the history of the failed Nitrolee electro chemical plant that was built on a peninsula of the Catawba River in Lancaster County.  Duke Power began construction of the plant in 1911, and it was completed by 1912 but never used, as another method for producing chemical fertilizer was invented.  There are ghostly remains of the old buildings still standing, and the KVLT is sponsoring a hike there on Sunday afternoon, November 4 beginning at 2:00 p.m.  Below is a website that has info about the plant.

Both events are free of charge, and the LCHC will be serving refreshments after the event of Tuesday night, October 23.
