The City of Lancaster’s Department of Solid Waste is diligently addressing manufacturing issues and striving to restore the leaf collection service to regular operation as soon as possible.

On November 7th an incident occurred with our new leaf truck, resulting in a fire while in the field. We are relieved to report that the driver inside the truck managed to exit safely before any harm occurred. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with preliminary suspicions pointing towards a potential manufacturing issue. The 2002 leaf truck, which was undergoing repairs, is scheduled to resume service next week. In addition, the city’s 2008 leaf truck has been undergoing repairs at the manufacturing facility for the past eight months due to persistent computer programming issues. The computer programming in the truck was a prototype and is no longer compatible with the current computer system. Staff have received official confirmation from the manufacturer that the 2008 truck is scheduled to arrive during the first week of December.

After reaching out to vendors across four states, staff have successfully recommended a new leaf truck for our city’s needs. The City Council will be voting on the approval of the new truck that has already been reserved for our city at the November 28th meeting. This is a crucial step towards ensuring that our city is well-maintained and up-to-date.

The city remains dedicated to providing a high level of service, and we appreciate your understanding during this period of adjustment. City staff will keep residents informed as the situation progresses, and we anticipate a prompt resolution of these manufacturing issues. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused their fall clean-up plans. Please be assured that the city remains dedicated to providing excellent service to our residents, and we appreciate your patience and understanding.
